🌴 San Diego Brief
Your Week Ahead.
Week of October 12–18, 2026
Your 5–7 minute guide to San Diego news, business, real estate, restaurants, sports, and the best things happening around town.
👋 Good Morning, San Diego!
Happy Monday!
San Diego is getting quite the weather roller coaster this October.
After a record-breaking heat wave, the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel brought rain, strong winds, dangerous surf, and coastal flooding concerns to Southern California.
The beginning of this week should be cooler and unsettled before sunshine returns. But don't put away the sunscreen just yet. Another significant warmup is forecast for Friday and Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Padres' postseason has come to an end, San Diego County is moving forward with plans to attract more film and television productions, mortgage rates have climbed to their highest level in nearly three years, and September housing numbers show a slowdown in home sales.
Fortunately, there's plenty to look forward to.
Mission Bayfest returns for three days of music, Borrego Springs celebrates its 60th desert festival, Bonnie Raitt performs at the Rady Shell, San Diego FC hosts Houston before visiting the LA Galaxy, and SDSU welcomes Fresno State for a Saturday-night rivalry game.
Let's get into it.

📰 Top Stories
🌧 San Diego Faces Flooding Concerns After Tropical Storm Rachel
San Diego is dealing with an unusual October weather event.
Post-Tropical Storm Rachel moved into northern Baja California over the weekend, bringing heavy rainfall, gusty winds, dangerous surf, and flooding concerns throughout Southern California.
The National Weather Service issued flood and coastal warnings as communities prepared for potentially damaging conditions.
City crews worked to clear drainage channels and prepare flood-prone areas, including portions of Sorrento Valley and Southcrest.
Coastal flooding and beach erosion remain concerns as unusually high tides combine with powerful ocean swells.
The National Weather Service's coastal flood advisory extends into Tuesday afternoon.
Why it matters: San Diego has experienced unusually warm ocean temperatures and elevated sea levels this year. With winter approaching, coastal protection, drainage infrastructure, and storm preparedness are becoming increasingly important.
Local Reminder: Avoid flooded roads, storm channels, and closed beaches. Check current conditions before heading toward the coast.
🎬 San Diego Wants Hollywood to Come Back
Could San Diego become a major destination for film and television production again?
County supervisors have unanimously supported the initial steps toward creating the San Diego County Film Initiative.
The proposal includes a regional film office that would help production companies coordinate permits, locations, and other requirements across different jurisdictions.
It also proposes an annual $1.5 million production rebate program designed to encourage film and television projects to work in San Diego County.
County staff are expected to return with a formal ordinance.
San Diego has a long filmmaking history, including productions such as Top Gun, Traffic, and Almost Famous.
Why it matters: Film production creates work for more than actors and camera crews.
Hotels, restaurants, transportation companies, construction crews, electricians, equipment suppliers, and local businesses can all benefit when productions come to town.
The proposal is still being developed, but it could become another economic-development opportunity for the region.
⚾ Padres' October Run Comes to an End
The Padres gave San Diego another exciting season, but their championship hopes ended last week.
Milwaukee defeated San Diego 3–1 in Game 4 of the National League Division Series, winning the best-of-five series three games to one.
The Padres finished the regular season with 91 victories and reached the postseason for the third consecutive year.
San Diego swept the Chicago Cubs in the Wild Card Series before falling to Milwaukee.
There were plenty of memorable moments, but another season ended short of the World Series.
What we're watching: The offseason now becomes the focus.
Roster decisions, pitching depth, player development, and potential moves will ]determine how the Padres approach 2027.
For now, San Diego can appreciate another 90-win season and another October appearance.
🏠 Real Estate Watch
San Diego Housing Market — September 2026
The latest numbers show a housing market that's still expensive but beginning to experience slower transaction activity.
Market Snapshot
🏡 Countywide Median Sale Price: $899,000
📈 Year-Over-Year Price Change: +1.6%
🏘 Closed Home Sales: 1,827
📉 Year-Over-Year Sales Change: -11.6%
📝 Pending Sales: 1,881
📉 Pending Sales Change: -10.9%
🏠 New Listings: 2,925
📉 New Listings Change: -7.1%
🏦 30-Year Fixed Mortgage Rate: 7.40%
Housing figures reflect September 2026 countywide all-home data from the Pacific Southwest Association of REALTORS®. Mortgage data is Freddie Mac's October 8 national average.
Market Takeaway
San Diego's housing market is showing two different trends.
Home prices remain higher than a year ago.
But fewer properties are changing hands.
September closed sales declined approximately 12% compared with September 2025.
Pending sales also declined nearly 11%.
The combination of high home prices and mortgage rates above 7% is making affordability increasingly difficult.
Buyer's Tip
This may be a good time to look for properties that have been sitting on the market.
Ask about seller credits, repairs, and potential mortgage-rate buydowns.
Seller's Tip
Pricing matters more than ever.
Buyers are calculating monthly payments carefully. Homes that enter the market at unrealistic prices may require reductions before attracting serious offers.
💼 Business Briefs
🎬 San Diego County Explores Film Production Incentives
County officials are developing a regional film initiative that could include a dedicated film office and an annual $1.5 million production rebate program.
The goal is to attract more production activity and create local employment opportunities.
🏡 Mortgage Rates Reach 7.40%
Freddie Mac's October 8 survey shows the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate increased from 7.28% to 7.40%.
That's the seventh consecutive weekly increase.
Higher borrowing costs affect more than homebuyers. They also influence construction, remodeling, real estate services, furniture sales, and other housing-related businesses.
💼 Tourism Organizations Have a Funding Opportunity
The San Diego Tourism Marketing District is accepting applications for its FY2028 annual funding cycle.
Organizations capable of generating additional hotel stays can apply.
The application deadline is November 13, 2026, at 5 PM.
A virtual application workshop is scheduled for Thursday, October 15, from 2–3:30 PM.
This could be worth exploring for organizations planning events that attract visitors to San Diego.
