I Almost Threw Out My Keurig. It Wasn't Broken.
Every cup from my Keurig started tasting weak, flat, stale — so I unplugged it and stuck it in a closet. Then I learned the dirty secret of grocery store K-Cups: by the time a pod reaches your kitchen, it's usually spent months going from factory to warehouse to truck to shelf. The flavor oils are long gone. Some brands even over-roast to hide it.
The fix wasn't a new machine. It was fresh pods from Angelino's, a family-owned L.A. roastery that roasts, packs, and ships within 3–5 days — straight to your door, from 39¢ a cup. Over 1,000,000 happy customers. 50+ flavors, no subscription required, and 15% off your first order, applied automatically at checkout.

And if you're looking for something to do this weekend, you're in luck.
Ocean Beach Oktoberfest hits the beach Friday and Saturday. The La Jolla Art & Wine Festival takes over the Village Saturday and Sunday. A Taste of Coronado gives food lovers another reason to cross the bridge, and fall and Halloween events are now underway across the county.
Let's get into it.

📰 TOP STORIES
⚾ PADRES COME HOME WITH THEIR SEASON ON THE LINE
Petco Park is going to be loud Tuesday night.
Very loud.
The Padres return home trailing Milwaukee 2–0 in the National League Division Series after dropping the first two games in Milwaukee.
Game 2 was especially painful.
San Diego lost 4–3 Sunday, leaving the Padres one loss away from elimination.
Now the series comes home.
NLDS — GAME 3
📍 Petco Park
📅 Tuesday, October 6
⏰ 6:30 PM
If the Padres win Tuesday:
GAME 4
📍 Petco Park
📅 Wednesday, October 7
⏰ 7:00 PM
And if San Diego can force a deciding Game 5?
The series would return to Milwaukee Friday.
This isn't complicated anymore.
Win Tuesday or the season is over.
Why It Matters
San Diego has spent the last several years transforming itself into a legitimate baseball city.
Petco Park has become one of baseball's best atmospheres.
Tuesday night should take that to another level.
One game.
One season.
Everything on the line.
🔥 OCTOBER HEAT HITS SAN DIEGO
Summer apparently didn't get the memo that it's October.
The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning through Thursday evening for portions of the San Diego region.
Downtown San Diego started the week under unusually hot conditions, while inland communities are dealing with even more extreme temperatures.
The heat is also contributing to elevated wildfire concerns.
Why It Matters
This isn't normal beach weather.
It's potentially dangerous heat.
Residents should pay particular attention to:
💧 Hydration
🐕 Pets
👴 Older family members
🏃 Outdoor exercise
🚗 Children or pets in vehicles
🔥 Fire conditions
If you're heading inland this week, expect temperatures considerably higher than along the coast.
💡 POWER SHUTOFFS REMAIN A CONCERN
The combination of extreme heat, Santa Ana winds and wildfire conditions has put thousands of San Diego County customers at risk of Public Safety Power Shutoffs.
Areas that have been monitored include communities in North, East and South County.
Among them:
Poway.
El Cajon.
Julian.
Ramona.
Fallbrook.
Lakeside.
Valley Center.
Pauma.
Boulevard.
And surrounding communities.
At one point, nearly 35,000 customers were considered potentially affected.
Why It Matters
Public Safety Power Shutoffs are designed to reduce wildfire risk during dangerous conditions.
If you live in an inland or backcountry community, keep phones charged and check your current utility status before assuming your power will remain uninterrupted.
❤️ $50 MILLION GIFT COULD TRANSFORM HOUSING FOR HOMELESS SENIORS
This is one of the most encouraging San Diego stories we've seen recently.
Qualcomm co-founder Irwin Jacobs has committed $50 million toward a major expansion of Father Joe's Villages.
The project would redevelop the aging Joan Kroc Center on Imperial Avenue into a large residential campus.
Preliminary plans call for:
🏢 Three residential towers
🏠 More than 500 housing units
👴 130 units specifically for seniors
🏥 Homeless services on the lower floors
⛪ A new chapel
The tallest proposed tower would rise 19 stories.
Construction could begin next year, with the first phase targeted for completion in 2029.
Why It Matters
San Diego's homeless population is aging.
Housing combined with on-site services could provide a more permanent solution for vulnerable seniors than cycling people through temporary shelters.
And $50 million can move a project from an idea toward reality.
💵 REAL ESTATE WATCH
San Diego Buyers Are Becoming More Selective
There's a subtle change happening in San Diego real estate.
Homes remain expensive.
Inventory remains limited.
But buyers aren't jumping on everything anymore.
New September housing data shows active listings in the San Diego market were down about 1.5% from a year earlier, while nationally inventory increased.
That limited supply continues supporting San Diego prices.
But higher mortgage rates are putting serious pressure on affordability.
SEPTEMBER SNAPSHOT
🏠 Active Listings: Approximately 5,749
📉 Year-over-Year Inventory: Down 1.5%
🏷 Median Listing Price — San Diego-Carlsbad: Approximately $888,450
💰 30-Year Fixed Mortgage: 7.28%
The September median listing price declined from approximately $899,000 in August.
What We're Seeing
San Diego remains expensive.
But the market is becoming more negotiable.
That's an important distinction.
Sellers who price correctly can still attract buyers.
Sellers who price their homes based on what their neighbor received two years ago may be in for a longer wait.
🏡 BUYER'S TIP
Don't just look at new listings.
Search for:
30+ days on market
Price reductions
Back-on-market properties
Vacant homes
Homes needing cosmetic improvements
Those sellers may be much more willing to negotiate.
And with mortgage rates now above 7%, asking for a seller-paid rate buydown could sometimes be more valuable than negotiating only on price.
🏠 SELLER'S TIP
Today's buyer is paying attention.
They can instantly compare your home with every competing property in the neighborhood.
Price realistically.
Make the home easy to show.
And don't underestimate photography and presentation.
The first two weeks still matter.
💰 MORTGAGE WATCH
This week's number isn't going to make homebuyers happy.
30-YEAR FIXED MORTGAGE
7.28%
That's up from:
7.03% the previous week.
Mortgage rates have now risen for several consecutive weeks.
For San Diego buyers financing large loan balances, that change can have a meaningful effect on the monthly payment.
San Diego Brief Take
Don't focus only on the sales price.
Ask your lender to show you:
Monthly payment at today's rate
versus
Monthly payment with a temporary or permanent seller-funded rate buydown.
Sometimes that's where the better deal is hiding.
💼 BUSINESS BRIEF
⚡ Energy and Wildfire Risk Take Center Stage
Extreme heat isn't just a weather story.
It's a business story.
Power interruptions can affect restaurants, retailers, construction companies, offices and home-based businesses.
This week's heat and wildfire conditions are another reminder that backup power, data protection and emergency planning aren't just concerns for large companies.
Small businesses need plans too.
🤖 CALIFORNIA'S AI ECONOMY CONTINUES GROWING
Artificial intelligence continues playing an increasingly important role in California's economy.
Technology investment is helping support economic growth even while unemployment remains elevated.
San Diego is positioned in an interesting place within that trend.
The region already has strong industries in:
Defense.
Biotechnology.
Telecommunications.
Cybersecurity.
Healthcare.
Robotics.
And advanced manufacturing.
AI will increasingly touch nearly all of them.

😊 GOOD NEWS
$50 MILLION FOR HOUSING HOMELESS SENIORS
We're giving this story another mention because it deserves one.
Irwin Jacobs' $50 million gift to Father Joe's Villages could help create more than 500 housing units in downtown San Diego.
And 130 of those units would specifically serve seniors.
The proposed Joan and Irwin Jacobs Family Campus would combine permanent housing with services in one location.
San Diego spends a lot of time talking about homelessness.
This is somebody putting serious money behind a potential solution.
That's good news worth sharing.
📍 NEIGHBORHOOD SPOTLIGHT

This weekend belongs to OB.
Ocean Beach Oktoberfest brings the party Friday and Saturday.
But don't just go to the festival.

And spend a little money with an independent local business.
