San Diego's new driverless taxis are already creating a debate at City Hall. The local housing market continues to defy the national slowdown, with the county's median sale price approaching $1 million. Transit riders should prepare for higher fares beginning October 1, while a new program could protect thousands of lower-income riders from those increases.

And if you're looking for something to do?

This is a big San Diego weekend.

San Diego Restaurant Week is underway, Bayfair brings some of the world's fastest powerboats to Mission Bay, the Padres return to Petco Park, San Diego Wave plays Friday night, SDSU football returns home Saturday, Adams Avenue fills with live music, and ArtWalk takes over Carlsbad.

Oh—and San Diego FC faces Club Tijuana Wednesday night.

🚕 San Diego City Council is taking a closer look at Waymo and other robotaxis after driverless service began rolling out locally.

🏠 San Diego County's median home sale price reached $961,781 in August, up 5.7% from a year earlier.

📈 Mortgage rates moved higher again, with the average 30-year fixed mortgage reaching 6.76%.

🚎 MTS and NCTD fares increase October 1, but a new PRONTO LIFE program will preserve current prices for qualifying lower-income riders.

🍽 San Diego Restaurant Week runs through September 20, featuring more than 100 restaurants across 30+ neighborhoods.

🚤 San Diego Bayfair returns September 18–20 to Mission Bay.

Waymo's arrival in San Diego has quickly gone from a technology story to a City Hall story.

Some San Diego City Council members want greater local authority over driverless taxi companies operating on city streets.

Among the issues being raised are whether the city should be able to regulate how many autonomous vehicles operate, where they can park and charge, and how frequently empty vehicles can circulate.

Council members have also raised concerns about what widespread autonomous transportation could eventually mean for taxi, rideshare and delivery jobs.

The complication?

Much of the regulatory authority currently rests with the state rather than the city.

Why it matters: San Diego is becoming a real-world testing ground for autonomous transportation. The question is no longer whether driverless cars are coming.

They're here.

Now the debate becomes how much control local communities should have over them.

Anyone waiting for San Diego housing prices to collapse is still waiting.

New August housing data shows the median San Diego County home sold for $961,781, up 5.7% from a year ago.

Even more interesting: homes sold in a median of just 28 days.

Approximately 35% of homes sold above asking price, while active inventory fell 5.6% from a year earlier.

There is one important warning sign, however.

Pending sales dropped 13% year-over-year.

San Diego still has strong demand for desirable homes, but affordability is putting serious pressure on buyers.

High prices combined with mortgage rates approaching 7% have created a strange market:

Prices remain strong, but fewer people can comfortably afford them.

San Diego continues behaving differently from many housing markets around the country.

Nationally, buyers have gained negotiating power as inventory grows.

Locally, limited inventory is still helping support prices.

But don't confuse a high median price with every house being easy to sell.

Buyers are becoming much more selective.

Homes that are remodeled, well located and priced correctly can still attract competition.

Properties needing substantial work—or sellers testing an unrealistic price—can sit.

Look for homes that have been on the market for 30+ days.

That's where sellers may become more receptive to:

• Price reductions
• Closing-cost credits
• Mortgage-rate buydowns
• Repair credits

The first two weeks matter.

Pricing correctly when your property first hits the market is usually better than starting too high and chasing buyers downward later.

MTS and North County Transit District fares are scheduled to increase beginning October 1.

Adult fares will move from:

One Way: $2.50 → $3.00

Daily Pass: $6 → $7

Monthly Pass: $72 → $85

But there's an important new program.

Qualifying residents enrolled in programs including CalFresh, Medi-Cal and CalWORKs can apply for PRONTO LIFE.

Eligible riders will effectively keep today's lower fare structure:

$2.50 one way

$6 daily

$72 monthly

Regional officials estimate tens of thousands of current transit riders could qualify.

Why it matters: San Diego hasn't had a major regional transit fare increase since 2009. This will be a noticeable change for regular commuters.

San Diego isn't just tourism, biotech and defense anymore.

The region is increasingly becoming a testing ground for new transportation technology, AI, autonomous vehicles, aerospace, satellite communications and advanced defense technology.

Waymo's rollout is a visible example.

But behind the scenes, San Diego's technology and defense companies continue competing for major national and international contracts.

Meanwhile, the city's hospitality economy gets a boost this week from Restaurant Week, major sporting events and one of Mission Bay's largest annual festivals.

Downtown entertainment.

Live Nation has shown interest in expanding its presence downtown, adding another potentially significant piece to the continuing evolution of San Diego's urban core.

Downtown isn't simply competing for residents and office workers anymore.

Entertainment could become an increasingly important part of its economic future.

Put the diet on hold.

San Diego Restaurant Week runs September 13–20.

San Diego landed an interesting first.

Renowned Chinese restaurateur Chef Fei has opened his first U.S. restaurant at Westfield UTC.

Chef Fei operates more than 200 locations internationally and is known for Hunan-style stir-fry cooking.

The concept focuses on intense wok cooking that produces the smoky flavor often called wok hei.

Why San Diego?

UTC has quietly become one of Southern California's strongest destinations for major Asian restaurant brands.

Add this one to the list.

Pali Wine Co. has moved from Little Italy and opened a new tasting room in Hillcrest.

The new location at 1440 University Avenue brings the company's Central Coast wines into the heart of one of San Diego's busiest dining neighborhoods.

Expect wine, indoor/outdoor seating and an expanding food and beverage menu.

Hillcrest continues to be one of the city's neighborhoods worth watching for new restaurant and hospitality concepts.

Get ready for some noise on Mission Bay.

San Diego Bayfair returns for three days of powerboat racing and beachside entertainment.

The event includes some of the fastest racing boats you'll see anywhere, including H1 Unlimited hydroplanes.

It's part motorsports.

Part beach festival.

And completely San Diego.

Friday's match is also Native American Heritage Night.

A great way to kick off the weekend.

One of San Diego's best neighborhood festivals returns.

The Adams Avenue Street Fair is billed as Southern California's largest free two-day music festival.

Sunday brings the finale of Bayfair and another full day of high-speed racing.

If you've never watched unlimited hydroplanes fly across Mission Bay, this is the weekend to check it out.

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library is expanding into San Diego County.

The internationally recognized program mails participating children a free, age-appropriate book every month from birth until age five.

San Diego County has more than 170,000 children under age five, making it the most populous county in the country to offer the program.

That means potentially dozens of books arriving in a child's home before kindergarten.
