This week brings two San Diego FC home matches at Snapdragon Stadium, the Wave return home Saturday afternoon, the Padres spend the first half of the week at Petco Park before heading north to San Francisco, and both SDSU and USD football hit the road.

Outside of sports, California lawmakers have taken a major step toward accelerating the Midway Rising redevelopment, Alaska Airlines is adding San Diego's 50th nonstop destination, the airport has landed more than $15 million to help soundproof hundreds of nearby homes, and a San Diego defense company has secured another international contract.

The weekend is packed too.

🌡 San Diego starts the week hot before temperatures cool considerably by the weekend.

One of San Diego's largest proposed redevelopment projects just moved another step forward.

California lawmakers approved legislation intended to accelerate the Midway Rising project around the existing Sports Arena site.

The massive proposal includes a new arena, approximately 4,250 homes, retail and entertainment space, and nearly 15 acres of public parks.

The legislation is designed to allow developers to rely on San Diego's existing environmental review while limiting the potential for lengthy environmental litigation.

The proposal has supporters who believe the long-neglected Midway area is ready for major investment.

It also has critics who argue a project of this size deserves additional environmental scrutiny.

Why it matters: Few projects have the potential to change an entire San Diego neighborhood like Midway Rising. If completed, it could transform the Sports Arena area into one of the city's largest new mixed-use communities.

San Diego International Airport continues expanding its reach.

Alaska Airlines announced new seasonal nonstop service between San Diego and Loreto, Mexico, beginning December 19.

The new route will become Alaska's 50th nonstop destination from San Diego.

Flights are scheduled twice weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays through April 28, 2027.

The announcement also comes as Alaska celebrates 40 years of serving San Diego.

Loreto sits along the Sea of Cortez in Baja California Sur and is known for beaches, fishing, outdoor recreation, and a quieter atmosphere than some of Mexico's larger resort destinations.

Why it matters: More nonstop destinations make San Diego more attractive to both residents and visitors. They also strengthen tourism and business connections between San Diego and Mexico.

For hundreds of households living beneath San Diego International Airport's flight path, some relief could be coming.

The Federal Aviation Administration awarded the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority $15.3 million for its Quieter Home Program.

The funding is expected to provide sound insulation improvements for roughly 400 homes.

Typical upgrades can include new windows, doors, weather stripping, and ventilation improvements designed to reduce aircraft noise inside homes.

Neighborhoods affected by airport noise include areas around Point Loma, Ocean Beach, Bankers Hill, Middletown, Golden Hill, and South Park.

Why it matters: San Diego's airport is unusually close to dense residential neighborhoods. The Quieter Home Program helps reduce one of the tradeoffs that comes with having a major airport just minutes from downtown.

San Diego's defense and technology economy continues generating major contracts.

Kratos Defense & Security Solutions announced a contract valued at more than $20 million to provide mobile satellite communications gateways for a defense customer in Asia.

The systems are designed to provide resilient communications that can operate in challenging environments.

Kratos is part of San Diego's large defense technology ecosystem, which continues expanding beyond traditional shipbuilding and military installations into drones, space systems, communications, cybersecurity, and advanced weapons technologies.

Why it matters: Defense remains one of San Diego's most important economic engines, supporting thousands of technical and engineering jobs throughout the region.

There isn't much room for error anymore.

The Padres enter Labor Day week fighting for a place in the National League postseason.

San Diego hosts Washington for three games at Petco Park Monday through Wednesday before traveling north for a three-game weekend series against the San Francisco Giants.

The Wild Card race remains extremely tight, making every September game meaningful.

Why it matters: Beyond the standings, a playoff run keeps Petco Park and downtown San Diego busy deep into the fall—benefiting restaurants, hotels, bars, transportation companies, and local businesses.

San Diego's housing market remains expensive—and surprisingly competitive.

Redfin's latest countywide sales data shows a median price of approximately $937,000, about 2.4% higher than a year earlier.

Homes are also moving faster.

The typical home sold in about 29 days, compared with 36 days during the same period last year.

But there's another side to the market.

Fresh August listing data shows San Diego's median asking price around $899,000, down from a year earlier.

That tells us sellers are becoming more realistic even while completed sale prices remain strong.

Mortgage rates aren't helping.

Freddie Mac's September 3 survey puts the average 30-year fixed mortgage at 6.71%, up from 6.66% the previous week.

Buyer's Tip: Don't assume every San Diego property will receive multiple offers. Watch listings that have been sitting for several weeks—especially those that already received a price reduction.

Seller's Tip: Buyers still want San Diego real estate, but they're paying much closer attention to value. Pricing correctly during the first two weeks remains critical.

The carrier will begin nonstop San Diego-to-Loreto service December 19, giving Alaska 50 nonstop destinations from SAN and strengthening San Diego's air connections with Baja California Sur.

The San Diego-based defense technology company will provide mobile satellite communications gateways to an international defense customer.

San Diego's newest restaurant list has another interesting addition.

Chef Fei recently joined the dining lineup near UTC and is one of several restaurants added to Eater San Diego's September list of the city's most notable new openings.

The latest group also includes Goop Kitchen, House of Mandi, Zuma, Pali Wine, and Honor Bar.

San Diego's restaurant market keeps evolving quickly, particularly around UTC, One Paseo, downtown, Little Italy, and North County.

If you've been eating at the same familiar places all summer, September gives you plenty of excuses to try somewhere new.

Serpent & Stone – Downtown

This new Greek-inspired restaurant and speakeasy opened downtown this month behind Salvatore's Cucina & Lounge.

Expect Greek and Mediterranean dishes including souvlaki, meatballs, grilled skewers, seafood, and cocktails inspired by Greek mythology.

It's designed to transition from dinner into a late-night destination.

Head to Cardiff-by-the-Sea Saturday or Sunday for the Greek Festival, then finish the day near the coast for dinner and sunset.

That's a pretty San Diego way to spend a September weekend.

🏄 U.S. Open Adaptive Surfing Championships

Some of the world's top adaptive surfers compete in Oceanside as part of the Adaptive Surfing Professionals World Championship Tour.

Athletes compete across multiple divisions while the event highlights accessibility, athletic achievement, and the therapeutic power of surfing.

The competition runs through Sunday.

🎃 SeaWorld Halloween Spooktacular

SeaWorld San Diego

Halloween arrives early this year.

SeaWorld launches its family-friendly Spooktacular Friday with trick-or-treating, characters, seasonal entertainment, a pumpkin patch, and the California debut of the new Baby Shark Halloween Show.

The daytime celebration continues throughout the fall.

When the sun goes down, SeaWorld changes personalities.

Howl-O-Scream returns Friday night with haunted attractions, scare zones, rides, themed bars, and live entertainment.

Old-school surfing takes center stage in Pacific Beach.

🌱 UC Master Gardener Plant Sale

San Diego's own Pierce The Veil comes home for the finale of its I Can't Hear You World Tour.

It's the band's biggest—and only mainland North American headline show of 2026.
